Nineteen Twenties

1920 a colorful age, an age where women can have a toke and feel

rebellious. It was an age where architecture flipped its lens and took a whole

new design. An age where cars, the period revolutionized its meaning and its

industry. A whole new age in art had evolved, the Roaring Twenties.

The “ jazz age” some might call it, was a period of great opportunity

and success. Even with great potential this particular age gave birth to debt.

Consumerism plays a big role in this country. The country that can not get

enough. The plethora of people that owe money or are in debt of today’s world,

was influenced by the 20’s.

Automobiles played a big role in the consumerism back in 1920. It

was actually because of the automobile, “The American economy's phenomenal

growth rate.. ” (Cliffs Notes) was risen. More cars equal more people. More

people, more demand is needed. The year between1920 to 1929, the number of

cars on the street had tripled. With the help of Ford’s concept of mass

production, the demand is meet. Therefore more parts: mirrors, bumpers, more

plastic, metal, rubber, etc. this results to copious amounts of people purchasing

cars with loans and credit. Which can lead to high amounts of interest resulting

a high chance of debt.

Adverting is also another department that took a hit in the time. The

techniques used in posters and tabloids influenced many consumers in buying

products. This was the start of graphic designers. They were expert sales men

of the time. They have created trends and demand had escalated. Demand of

supply had been shifting. Therefore different designs for posters, signs,

billboards are being produced, “ Supply exceeded demand. Dynamic design

therefore became an essential means of persuading customers to buy a

particular product.” ( Duncan 150). 1920 took design in to a new perspective in

consumerism. Tabliods, magazines posters all influenced many consumers to

feel good about purchasing a certain product. Acrroding to Wiki Answers, Coca-

Cola was advertised with its unique design to be sold as a medicine. Because of

this, it had influenced storekeppers to buy their product. Now Coca- Cola is one

of U.S’s biggest advertising product.

Fashion took a big change in this time period. It had influenced

women to be more expressive. Fashion had also affected women’s roles in

society. If one were to wear a particular designers outfit, that gives her a status.

Because of how fashion changed, it gave many young females a sense of

freedom. “Women “bobbed”, or cut their hair short to fit under the popular

hats..” (Tirocchi Sisters). Because fashion had changed the roles of women,

more women want to buy beauty products to match their dresses. At the same

time they want to look more presentable. They would go to jewelery stores and

purchas a certain stone to match their outfit. In the 1920’s more women want to

look more appealing. With the new fashion that hit the tweites, sports wear was

a new target for designers. They took some of the designs from Romans, the

“tunic”. This short skirt with angled folds gave a more freedom / agresive look.

After coming back from World War 1, women wanted to show their place as

equals to their husbands. Therefore keeping up with fashion, buying certain

products give them an appeal of freedom and class.

The states had benefited much from the 20’s, but also had suffered.

From 1920-21 the country suffered from a quick recession right after World War

Gradually the economy had suffered causing many to be in debt. Prices where

being dropped tremendously, “..Model T that sold for $850 in 1908 sold for $290

in 1924.” (Cliffs Notes). This took a big hit in the economy, causing workers to

lose their jobs.

This time period had its glory moments where women started to

express their individuality, automobiles became identities, produced various jobs.

with the development in technology and the high demand, consumerism took a

toll in the economy. The color decade produced a credit system that caused

debt. With the illusion of confusing want from need, this results to more supply,

more demand, more loans, more debt, The Roaring Twenties.

Final Draft

1920 a color age, an age where women can have a toke and feel

rebellious. Its is an age where architecture flipped its lens and took a whole

new design. Cars, the period revolutionized its meaning and the industry. A

whole new age in art had evolved, the Roaring Twenties.

Art Deco was a big design movement in art history. It influenced

manyarchitects, engineers, designers, etc. the moment originated from

Belgium and then later western Europe and the us adapted the moment. Art

Deco was based off on a system where geometric, clean ziggurat shapes,

etc. This helped the design of the Chrysler building. According

to,http://www.slideshare.net/clouclou60/arts-in-the-roaring-twenties, “One of

the most remarkable building featuring this style..” Art Deco went above and

beyond the design of repetition and redundancy approach. It changed the

industry in a way where you can fit more “practical furniture” in compact

rooms. It had exceeded its boundaries in industrial design. The classic

elegant appeal made an outstanding landmark in design history.

This period affected painters causing a trend, surrealism. The most

famous painters of that time where; Picasso, Klee, and Miro. Surrealism is

based on catching the viewers off guard. The ambiguity and how direct the

style, truly sets off a spark.

The age of women’s status became a standard. The women that

rebelled against the typical Victorian design, were called flappers. The word

migrated from England. It obtained its meaning from an old word, prostitute.

The word flap got its name cause of the women at that time had their hair

flapped back. The style they had was more flamboyant in a more sexual

appeal approach. Aside from their crude humor they were sought out after

their style. They were influenced with French fashion elements, for example

the works of Coco Chanel

Black Tear Drop

She can be tough to deal with sometimes. She complains a lot cause I don’t feed her enough. She has a high temper if I press her buttons to much. She is considered to be high maintenance. Therefore I am always broke because of her. We have been through a lot, good and bad. In the end I still love her. She is my baby,350z.

The Nissan 350z, a two door roadster. It is small and compact, highly favored in racing. The car caters more to just the diver. It holds a grand total of two passengers. This is no soccer mom transportation. my personal 350z is black with black interior, sitting on 18” XXR 27 wheels. It pushes around 310 horse power to the wheels. I also installed a Nismo exhaust system. Which adds around 10 to 20 horse power. It is an amazing machine.

The design of the car is superb. Compacting a machine that has a v6 engine, is truly remarkable. the interesting part of the engine is that the cylinders don’t line vertically but rather in a center black form. The intake position was well thought out, giving an option of another intake if preferred. The stance of the vehicle is wide. Its give the car more ground coverage therefore handling will be at ease. What truly strikes my attention to car, is the lines. The lines of the car brings out the beauty of car. It has a “tear drop” look. More like a Porsche, but better. Through out the Z family, the 350z is by far one of Nissan’s best design.

No one is perfect. The 350z even though it is a remarkable automobile, it still has some flaws. The down side of the car, in my opinion, would be the space. This argument is based on the fact that I am an illustration student. I tend to have trouble fitting my sculptures, perspective boards, measurement instruments, etc. It can be a hassle at times. In the end my two cents would count because it is a sports car. The car is not meant to carry anything but two passengers. Another down fall in my aspect would be the cup holders. There are basically none. If you plane on doing through a drive -thru, forget it. There are many cases where I would need to hold my own drink between my lap, when I have a passenger on board. This is all based on my experience of the car as a student.

Over all, the car delivers an enthusiast driver experience. Taking the 350z to the mountains, without my art supplies, is truly a treat. The deep purr sound it produces gives a tranquil experience. Windows rolled down, exhaust pie running on a high flow cat is every racers’ dream. I would be considered very lucky to even own this automobile. This car lives up to its reputation and delivers more than one can imagine. Nissan 350z, the beautiful tear drop on street.
